One
of the most striking figures of the Macedonian revolutionary movement and
its chief ideologist, was Goce Delcev. He matured into a real revolutionary
, broad-minded and clear-sighted, person who became a synonym for the uncompromising,
brave and honest freedom fighter.
Born on 23 January 1872 in Kukus, he continued his education
in Salonika, thus entering the world of science, literature and the first
socialist ideas. He showed a wide interest in areas of social science,
history, philosophy, socialist, and politics. His formation was influenced
by educational ideas from the 18th century, bourgeois revolutions, the
Paris Commune, and Russian revolutionary and democratic literature. He
read the works of Marks, Engels, Kautsky, Chernyshevsky, Dobrolyubov, Herzen
and others; a particularly deep impression was left on him by the views
of Pisarev, which helped later to form his own.
Goce Delcev was not only a fearless revolutionary and
patriot, devoted to improving the lot of his people, he was also a great
visionary. He took a very cosmopolitan view of the world: " I see the world
as an arena where the cultures of all nations compete ". This extremely
humane message (which is still valid today), was typical of this great
revolutionary humanist.
When Goce Delcev was killed on 4 May 1903 in the village
of Banica near Stip, news of his death came as a painful blow to the whole
of Macedonia.
