THEATRE

Theatre Several professional theatres located mostly in Skopje, Kumanovo, Veles, Bitola, Prilep, Stip and Strumica started to work after 1945. Today there are 13 active professional theatres in Macedonia. The Macedonian National Theatre (Drama, Opera and Ballet companies), the Drama Theatre, and the Theatre of the Nationalities are to be found in Skopje. All of the theatre company's in Macedonia comprise about 870 professional actors, singers, ballet dancers, directors, playwrights, set and costume designers, etc. There is also a professional theatre for children and 3 amateur theatres.

For over thirty years now, a traditional festival of Macedonian professional theatres has been taking place in Prilep in honour of Vojdan Cernodrinski, the founder of the modern Macedonian theatre. This festival also invites Macedonian Theatre company's from all over the world. Each year a festival of amateur and experimental Macedonian theatre company's is held in Kocani.

Further, an opera festival is held from the 9th to 31st of May in Skopje and its called the "May Opera Nights" in which different country's take part with some of the best operas ever, like "Carmena Burana", "Tosca", "Rigoleto", and "Aida", etc. Some of the country's that have taken place in the past years are Italy, USA, Bulgaria, Romania, SR Yugoslavia, Russia, and many others.
