The relief structure in Macedonia is very complex, and characterised
by large and high mountain massifs giving way to extensive, flat valley's
and plains. There are 90 mountain peaks higher than 2,000 meters. The highest
of them is Golem Korab, lying at 2,764 meters.
Some of the well known mountains in Macedonia are: Sar Planiana (Sar Mountain), Bistra, Korab, Galicica, Babuna, Plackovica, Belasica, Ograzden, Pelister, Kozuv, Baba, Nidje, Osogovski Planini (Mt. Osogovo). Sar Planina (80 km long and 10-20 km wide) is the biggest natural massif in Macedonia, with the highest peak of 2,760m high. These mountains have tens of glacial caves, some of which are filled with water. They form interesting high-mountain lakes, surrounded with rich pastures and beautiful landscapes. Korab and Bistra, the neighbouring mountains differ significantly, comparing their relief structure. Korab is the highest mountain in Macedonia, with its peak Kobilino Pole 2.764 m high. It has sharp peaks and steep slopes offering possibilities for Alpine climbing. These mountains are rich with wood, pastures, wild and tame animals. With a lot of springs, rivers and lakes, they are also rich in minerals.
