In the year of 1914, Austro-Hungary carried out a military
attack upon small Serbia. The goal was for Serbia to obey this big dominant
ruler, to be occupied, to put on Austro-Hungarian authority, and to rob
out it's treasures.
Serbia successfully defended its self for a short period
of time. France and England than entered the war because of their own reasons.
Soon they were joined by Italy, the Check-Republic and other countries.
While Germany arrived to help Austro-Hungary develop a front against Russia.
The whole world entered the war, pretending to be on
account of Serbia while the real reasons were bigger. Following was the
formation of two groups of power. On one side it were Austro-Hungary, Germany
and some others (called The Central Powers). On the other side were France,
England, Russia, and Italy (called The Powers Of The Big Antanta).
The wars were battled on European battle-fields, including
Macedonia, but Bulgaria was mutual for a period of time. Both the big Antanta
and the Central Powers promised Macedonia to be defined in that war. The
proposal coming from Germany and Austro-Hungary was more acceptable. They
promised all of Macedonia to Bulgaria.
From the year of 1915 the war was not going in Antantas
way, and Serbia was occupied. In Europe the Germans succeeded quickly.
However, on the Balkan Peninsula the front delayed in
Macedonia: in the middle of Mariovo above and bellow Bitola. The northern
areas were kept by Bulgaria and Germany, and the southern areas, from Solun
and above were held by the French and the Serbs, they each had 600.000
soldiers. In this region the front was severe till the end if the war,
till the (Autumn 1918), when the powers by Antanta won.
With Bulgaria entering the war, their armies occupied
both Macedonians parts-Vardar and Pirin. This delay of the front in this
part of Macedonia, was very clear to the Macedonians'. There was devastation
all over with, people dying or suffering from illnesses from hunger, cold
and bombardment. The men were mobilised on both sides: in the Bulgarian
and Serbian armies. Often two regions from one Macedonian village were
divided by these armies: one region was held by Serbs' and the other one
by Bulgarians'. They mobilised the people and it often the father had to
serve in one army and the son in the other (oppositions), or a brother
on one side and the other on the opposite side forced to shoot, to fight
one against the other. The tragedy of the Macedonian people was enormous.
With the war coming to an end the question aroused - "What will happened
to Macedonia".
The French and the English planned to form an Independent
Macedonian State. The Serb's and the Greek's opposed, as allies in the
war, they wanted their plunder, and they got it. Macedonia was definitely
divided as it was in the Balkan wars. Serbia received Vardar Macedonia,
Greece received Aegean Macedonia, while Bulgaria kept Pirin Macedonia.
