|
Lake Ohrid is the largest tectonic lake, and the second largest in the
Balkan Peninsula. It lies at an altitude of 693m, with a total area of
349 square kilometres and it entails a water temperature of around 24°C in summer. The biggest spring of lake Ohrid is found in the place called
"Biljanini Izvori" (Biljani Springs). The water has a special colour
that differs from any other lake because it is very clear, with a visibility
of up to 20 meters in some places. Lake Ohrid is the deepest on the Balkan
Peninsula with a depth of 285 meters. Also the natural conditions have
made possible for the survival of life forms from the Tertiary Period,
owing to which the lake has often been called a museum of living fossils.
There are 18 different types of fish that are found in the lake. One of the well known one's and the most delicious amongst the people is the Ohridska pastrmka (Ohrid trout). Other types of fish to be found are the eel and the white fish. The scales of the fish "plasica" (red spot trout) are used for production of the artificial "Ohrid pearls".
