LAKE DOJRAN

Lake Dojran is the smallest tectonic lake which is in danger. It is found in the south - eastern part of Macedonia, and lies at an altitude of 148 meters. The total area of it is 42.7 square kilometres, while the depth is only 10 meters with water temperature reaching up to 27°C. The lake is cut in two pieces, one belonging to the Republic of Macedonia (27.1 sq. km), and the other to Greece (15.6 sq. km). This lake is rich with fish, as 16 species of fish live in it. The fisherman use a technique that employs cormorants; a method of fishing existing nowhere else in the world except in China.

In the last few years the lake has been struggling for survival. The water level has dropped 1.5 meters below its permitted hydro-biological minimum. Therefore, the lake has been in danger of real ecological disaster because of the un - controlled use of water for farming by Greece.
