LAKES

In Macedonia there are natural and artificial lakes. The
major tourist attractions are the three large tectonic lakes; Ohrid, Prespa
and Dojran.
Then there are fifteen artificial lakes, some of which are Mavrovo, Glabocica, Debar, Tikves, Kalimanci, Berovo, Lipkovo, and Strezovo. The
largest is lake Mavrovo constructed in 1953, it covers an area of 13.7
sq. km with water volume 357 millions of m³. It is about 10 km long
and 3 km wide, and a maximum depth of 48 meters.
The 25 glacial lakes are the last and most beautiful. They are located in the highest areas of the mountain ranges, in Sar mountain, Pelister, Jablanica and Jakupica. Dating from the Ice Age, they have been known to the people as "Mountain Eyes".
