VALLEYS AND THE GROWING OF PLANTS
|
|
|
|
Macedonia has many interesting valley's which differ in size,
density of population, and vegetation. The largest valley is Pelagonija,
followed by Polog, the Skopje valley, Ovce pole, and Tikves. It is very
interesting for the tourists to see so many different plants that are grown
in the Macedonian valley's.
The
poppy is one very attractive plant that is grown in the districts of Kocani,
Tikves, and Strumica.
Besides cotton, fenicculum, a rather rare plant (also known as "anise") is grown and planted in the valley's of Tikves and Strumica. It is used in the process of preparing a very tasteful brandy "anasonka".
Further reference should be given to rice growing. Most rice fields are
close to Kocani, and along the rivers Babuna and Topolka.
The Macedonian rice is of an excellent quality and is used for the preparation of tasty food. While
Macedonia is a typical locality for growing of grapevine of excellent quality,
most of the vineyards are in the valley of Tikves. Besides the table grape
varieties, grape's for wine production are also grown. These wines, especially
from Tikves have been awarded by many international prizes. In Demir Kapija
(close to the highway), many modern wine cellars have been constructed,
and are very interesting to visit. A festival called "the vintage of Tikves",
is very attractive and it is held in Kavadarci in the middle of September.
In the valley of Gevgelija-Valandovo, the subtropical fruit pomegranate and figs are grown. While the valley's of Prespa and Polog are good for apple planting. The overall climate and natural conditions of Macedonia are suitable for growing the best qualities of strawberries, raspberries, water melons, tomatoes, peppers, beans, string beans, peas and the rare plant lentil.
