KOLE NEDELKOVSKI the
poet and fighter for Macedonian rights , was born in Voinica (district
of Veles) on the 16th of December in 1912, into the conditions of social
and political injustice under which the Macedonian people of that time
lived.
He finished the four year primary school in his native
village and enrolled in the high school in Veles. But before the first
term was over, he had been compelled to abandon school because of the utmost
poverty. This clever boy became an apprentice to a decorator in Skopje
where, at the same time, he attended a Sunday commercial school. We know
that at that time he showed particular interest in the Macedonian folk,
language, compiling words he did not know.
His poetry reflects the difficult life of the Macedonian
people before the World War II, but at the same time is a call for a better
future. Shortly before the outbreak of World War II, an anthology of his
poetry titled "Lightning" was published, and later the anthology "On Foot
in the World".
Nedelkovski was a strong advocate for the oppressed Macedonian
people. Although he was not a prolific writer, his literary work is a touching
witness to the life which was full of struggle and suffering. He was harassed
by the Bulgarian police his entire adult life., and finally in Sofia in
September 1941, he avoided capture by jumping from an attic window and
thereby killing himself.
