Kavadarci a town in the Tikvis valley lies
at an altitude of 280m above sea level, but has only been mentioned under
this name for the first time in the first half of the 19th century. The
place belonged to the bey's of Tikves, whose residence were protected by
towers. It was around one of these that the settlement gradually grew up.
In 1857, Kavadarci, had about 2,000 inhabitants and was part of the Bitola
pashalik (district under a pasha). At that time it had some fine bey's
residences and several mosques with tall minarets. Around the town there
are a lot of wine sellers and it is the main centre of vineyards in Macedonia
as well as the biggest producer of vine.
In the village of Vatasa, close to Kavadarci, a monument
was erected to thirteen young men who were killed by the Bulgarians during
the Second World War.
