Gostivar is found at an altitude of 530m
above sea level, and is located in the upper part of the Poloska Basin.
According to one character of Emperor Dusan, the town itself originates
from the Middle Ages. The source of the Vardar river is in its surroundings
near the village of Vrutok, and its neighbourhood is rich in game. The
town is linked by a road leading from Skopje to Debar. A fish pond with
Canadian trout is very close to it, while Gostivar is the last town in
the Polog Basin. The road leads further to lake Mavrovo, fourth as to its
size in Macedonia. The modern road winds along Mt. Vlajnica, rich with
woods, beautiful landscape and places where one can stop to view Polog
in the foothills of the mountain villages which resemble to a nice mosaic.
Somewhere in the middle of mountain, the road branches
off, leading to Kicevo(46km).
