Gevgelija a town on the right bank of the
Vardar is close to its confluence with the Konska. It lies at an altitude
of 55m above sea level, and is at the southern most point of Macedonia.
Many archaeological sites and rich finds have been discovered in the town
and its surroundings.
At the " Vardarski rid " site (Vardar hill), remains of
a Roman settlement have come to light. While the present town developed
from a village in the latter half of the 19th century.
Gevgelija is characterised by the Mediterranean climate
which makes possible the cultivation of different vegetables and fruit.
There are numerous plantations of vineyards with different sorts of grapes
such as "Afus-ali", while. Figs and lemons can also grow here. Gevgelija
is known for the breeding of the silk worm whose threads are used in Macedonia
for the production of silk textile. In such a climate, snow is very rare,
but the Negorecka Spa is close by.
