GANE TODOROVSKI was born on May 11, 1929 in Skopje. Fortunate
enough to receive the later part if his secondary education and the whole
of his higher education in a free country and in the Macedonian language,
he graduated in 1951 in Macedonian literature at the University of Skopje.
Throughout as a school boy he had published poems about the struggle and
the liberation of the country in local newspapers and periodicals, his
more serious engagement with poetry began at the University when he became
a member of its literary group, many of whose enthusiastic participants
are today well known writers and critics.
Beside books of poetry Todorovski has also published
translations of poetry from many languages - from Slovene, Serbian, Croatian,
Russian, English (Selected poems by E.A. Poe and also by Robert Frost).
He has studied and written about Macedonian's cultural and political history
and particularly its folklore. Todorovski is married, has two sons and
works as a Professor of Macedonian Language at the "Kiril and Metodij"
University in Skopje.
Gane Todorovski started writing when still at school.
In 1951, at the age of 24, he published his first book of poems entitled
"In The Dawns. Since then he has written six other books of poems: "Alarm
Tunes", 1953; "A Quiet Step", 1956; "Rainbow", 1960; "Apotheosis Of The
Working Day", 1964; "Bitter Gulps Uttered" and "Unbeautified Day", 1974;
"The Skopjani", 1981.
There is no need to make final pronouncements and generalisations.
Todorovski's poetry speaks for itself and his poetic growth, now at the
stage of its maturity, promises greater achievements. One should use the
labels "Conventional", "Traditional" and "Modern" cautiously as when applied
to his poetry they overlap. It is certain that with his realistic conceptions
of poetry and the ethnical functional of his poetics he has found his place
in his own time.
