NATURAL RESOURCES

Macedonia is rich in natural resources, including iron ore which is found in Tajmiste near Kicevo, (Zvan near Demir Hisar and Damjan in the vicinity of Radovis). From the ferrous metals, the most important are the zink and lead mines in the Kratovo - Zletovo region, and the copper explored close to Radovis. In the zone stretching from south - east of Veles to the Macedonian - Greek border, there are some ferro-nickel ore findings. However, other rare ores have been discovered such as molybdenum, wolfram, quick silver, and gold.
Marble Macedonia is also rich with non - ferrous metals. Special attention should be given to the marble and decorating stone deposits excavated close to Prilep, Gostivar and Tetovo. Other occasional findings include magnesite, and close to Kratovo there were deposits of quartzite - silex. In many places of Macedonia, bentolythic clays of excellent quality have also been discovered, are used in the ceramic industry.
