Bitola also known as the town of the consuls,
lies at an altitude
of 600m above sea level. Bitola is an old city situated in the southern
part of Pelagonija Plain. About
two kilometres from the centre of the city, like a large statue from the
time of Fillip II of Macedonia stands the ancient city of Heraclea. Bitola
got its present name during the time of the Macedonian Tsar Samuel.
In the modern times Bitola is an important industrial,
agricultural, commercial cultural and educational centre. The "Bitola"
Mining and Energy Combine is to be found here, whose thermo - electrical
power stations provide about 80% of the electrical energy of Macedonia.
The "Pelagonija" Agricultural and Industrial Combine is the largest in
Macedonia, and the Pelagonija Plain is the major Macedonian granary. Bitola
also has industrial facilities for the production of household appliances,
food, textile and leather. After the "Kiril and Metodij" University in
Skopje, the second University in the Republic of Macedonia is found in
Bitola. Bitola
has a wealthy historical past and some of the cultural and historical monuments
are witnesses of the time that has passed. The City Clock Tower in the
centre of the town, The Jail Tower, The Church of Sv. Dimitrija from the
XIX century, The "Bezisten" (Shopping Centre), all represent a great attraction
of Bitola. One of the oldest and the best theatre company's in the Republic
is to be found in this city, with an Art Gallery and a Museum.
Pelister mountain is found on the outskirts of Bitola.
Its richness in flora and fauna makes Pelister a national park, with well
known ski resorts and the two small lakes known as "Pelisterski Oci" (Pelister
Eyes).
The name of Milton Manaki is written in Bitola's history.
He was the first film cameraman in the Balkans starting to shoot with his
camera in 1905.
