Alexander
III,the Macedonian (Aleksander Makedonski)
also known as Alexander the Great was born in 356 BC in Pella, the
capital city in the Kingdom of Macedonia. A pupil of the philosopher Aristotle,
he came to the throne in 336 BC after the assassination of his father,
Philip II of Macedonia. Alexander was a mighty soldier who inherited his
father's ambition to destroy the Persian Empire and conquer the entire
world, and rule it. He led the Macedonian Army
to defeat the Persians at Issues then went on to conquer Syria, and the
Poetical cities of Egypt, where he founded Alexandria. In 331 BC, he routed
a huge Persian army at Arable and proclaimed himself King of Persia. He
moved eastwards, capturing Persian cities and marrying a Persian princess.
In the summer of 327 BC, he led his army on a campaign towards Asia, entering
lands that no one had previously dared to visit. He crossed the river Indus,
entering the vast territory of India where he brought most of Punjab under
his control.
Alexander and his soldiers conquered every army that
tried to stop them. He finally reached the Tar desert, a huge, unexplored
and mysterious place that is found
along what is now the border between India and Pakistan. Alexander was
ready to march eastwards on his great road to conquest, but his soldiers
were tired and longing for their beautiful homeland. With his soldiers
refusing to go further in the tropical rain, Alexander agreed to go back.
He died at Babylon in 323 BC, leaving his empire to be divided up amongst
his generals. Although he dies at a young age of 33, he remains to play
the greatest eternal role in human history.
Alexander's travel to India has been passed on through
traditional Macedonian stories for example "Bresko, the Macedonian tsar"
"(Bresko, Makedonskiot car)", noted by the very well known gatherer
of Macedonian folklore, Marko Cepenkov.
